Borderlands
Borderlands

During the last decade, authors and readers have been heard to utter a collective sigh of dismay that the publishing industry Once the elite continues to resemble the multiplex tripe factory of Hollywood, producing a cookie cutter product after another.

This situation would be funny (given the cultural snobbery Supreme mostly based in New York publishers have for their brothers create videos on the coast opposite) it was not for the fact that every town has a new edition chilling effect on the quantity and quality of new releases.

The law of diminishing returns is dreadful in its implications. Every major publisher is seeking to balance its annual loss leaders with a large Potter-esque mega-hit, it is inevitable that midlist authors are all but ignored. What chance have budding voice in this environment, especially those who seek to produce works bold innovation?

Although the situation is bleak, there is a very shiny silver coating. The recent emergence of publishers Independent highlighted a number of excellent books that would otherwise have languished in obscurity. A perfect example of this trend is pleased Borderlands Press. From 19,989, (editor and prolific award-winning author in his own right) Thomas F. Monteleone had been reported outside luxury edition limited to works of some of the biggest names in the genre of fiction and horror. Since 2007, Monteleone decided it was time broaden their horizons with a new line of trade paperback originals.

Having already been estimated by Virgin horror scribe F. Paul Wilson earlier this year, Borderlands has become a wildly original collection of three new stories in one volume. Fables from the Mud by Erik Quisling is already hailed as an instant cult classic, which will rank with "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" and the complete works of Shel Silverstein.

Applying robust humor and a decidedly philosophical approach to some of the greatest mysteries of life, Quisling presents three extraordinary heroes invertebrates: the Angry Clam, Glen ant, and Julius Gunther Weems the Worm Warrior. Page by page, Fables of mud dazzles readers with stories of gripping these three little miracles. Although at first glance it may seem given the simplicity of a children's book, be warned it is a volume that packs a king-size Wallop.

Hilarious and thought-provoking by turns, Fables is sure to challenge even the most sincere of readers. It is a book to cherish long after you've finished the first (of many) times.

Meanwhile, Thomas continues to go Monteleone ahead with its ambitious online commerce pocket. In late October, Borderlands Press his own novel, Serpentine, and in January of the year 2008 will see the release of Crimson Orgy, the long-awaited debut novel by Austin Williams. While Monteleone and other pioneering publishers of his ilk continue to promote fiction quality talented new voices, book lovers across America can feel confident that there will always be something interesting to read outside the narrow parameters of what the publishing industry elite considers "commercial".
