The global oil crisis and the excessive dependence on fossil fuels have paved the way for new developments in energy sources alternatives. One such source is biomass, which certainly has the potential to be considered a good substitute for fossil fuels. Seeds wealth are often planted in the throes of a crisis. Biomass is a natural source and renewable energy that is derived from the biological material that has just died and is used as biofuel. It usually comes from plants, but it also comes from animal matter and other biodegradable waste agricultural products. Examples of plants that can be used as biomass are maize, sugar cane, corn and switchgrass. Vegetable waste such as nuts, coconut, rice hulls and bagasse (waste from the cane sugar) are also examples of biomass. However, the biomass which excludes organic material which has been transformed by geological processes into substances such as coal or oil. In general, the biomass can be used either raw form or some kind of modification, the mixed form.
Biomass works like this. It is burned to produce heat which makes the water hot, which then produces steam that can power turbines. Given that biomass is also carbon-based fossil fuels such as traditional, it has a burn rate comparable makes it suitable as an energy source for production of electricity on a small scale. But unlike fossil fuels, biomass absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during his life growing. This helps to classify it as an efficient and cost-source fuel. Some argue that the use of biomass for energy instead of using it as an edible food, is unacceptable. This argument been amplified by the latest oil crisis and food prices, which critics point out that biomass may have contributed to the establishment or at least magnify the rising cost of staple foods. However, some studies suggest the amount of crops that go to production Biofuels may not be important enough to address the demand for food.
While the conversion to biofuels is likely inevitable, some are concerned about how the conversion will take place: The timing and cost of conversion is not yet clear. Thus the total direct and indirect costs and which groups benefit and which groups are suffering are major concerns. Through the leadership of Congress favoring an acceleration of the greenest energy in a way that benefits their constituents and lobbyists, the conversion of biomass will create winners and losers.
