Why original gameboy color games when played on a newer system?

I'm assuming the original gameboy games were designed without color. I do not understand is why they have the colors when played on a new system like the gameboy color or gameboy advance. Do you just added assuming colors would a future system that is compatible? Do you have something to do with the super nintendo gameboy? Or is the color of an external source, not really in the game? any help or links to information would be greatly appreciated.

The systems like the Game Boy Advance SP has built in them something that adds more color. Hope this helps.
