An undisclosed source has apparently told VG247 that Sony PlayStation 3 is for a radical overhaul of the interface up- firmware update pre-holiday season. PS3 Firmware 3.0 (v2.8 is out) will be "a completely new system," the website quoted its source as the call the update "a huge overhaul," comparable to Microsoft's New Xbox Experience "in some respects."
According to the source, new features include a mechanism for rating of other players (something the Xbox 360 had since launch), an option to report the disturbing elements of Sony and submit screenshots of their heinous acts, the ability to download patches background, and the ability to output HDMI video and optical digital audio simultaneously.
VG247 claims they were told "many more" but does not disclose what it all could be. If I had to guess, given recent rumors, Sony's planning to start a thinner, less expensive, more fully-featured PS3 as we head into the holidays. Do not call it a total makeover, but rather a way to turn heads and pick up sales during a particularly crucial selling period. We're halfway through the life cycles of these systems, and Sony has done very poorly by the standards almost everyone (most of all, himself). He obviously needs some major victories, and fast.
What will help: Uncharted 2, Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, Demon's Souls, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, and MAG – all PS3 exclusives, all due yet this year.
What is not Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3, Heavy Rain, White Knight Chronicles, The Last Guardian, and Final Fantasy XIII, all at the same time exclusives, 2009, now hit 2010.
And then there's what's missing in the list VG247 firmware. Where is the opportunity to go back and play PlayStation 2 games? What about global voice chat? Social media compatibility, including Twitter and Facebook integration? Invisible (And radically faster) synchronization trophy?
PS3 owners: Am I expecting too much? What new features are you most interested?
UPDATE: Sony Computer Entertainment America Director of Corporate Communications Patrick Seybold contacted me to say that history is in fact, baseless. "These rumors are completely untrue," he wrote, adding that "nothing has been announced or confirmed for next PlayStation firmware, and this is pure speculation. "
