Introduction to PSP Homebrew – Playstation Portable Tweaks
The PlayStation Portable is a handyman. It plays music, videos, surf the Internet and playing games. However, a growing number of people is not enough. With its powerful dual-processor configuration and Memory Stick Pro Duo slot, the PSP is a central pocket, capable of much more than just gaming and multimedia.
This is where the homebrew community comes in. With some changes to its software system, the PSP can run 3rd party software, like a regular computer. A massive community has emerged online that is dedicated to changes.
When Sony first released the PSP, it had no restrictions. It was possible to write 3rd party software and install it on a USB key. The community ps2dev created a homebrew development kit for the new system, and the developer community has begun to grow.
After all, Sony has begun to realize this was a problem. Although 3rd party utilities and games were harmless, they realized it was possible to run commercial games on the Memory Stick as well, using homebrew ISO loaders. Sony knew that this could harm turnover of the game, so they issued firmware version 2.0, which has removed that feature. In this version of firmware, and the following statement, it is impossible to launch anything but UMD disks and official game demos from Sony. While this makes piracy impossible, it also dealt a serious blow the burgeoning homebrew community.
In late 2005, Homebrew developer Fanjita discovered a tantalizing hole in Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. By copying a pirated game special register on the Memory Stick and load it in GTA, it was possible to purposely crash the PSP, and load custom code! For the first time since the release of firmware 2.00, it was possible to run homebrew code again. At the time, PSP with firmware 1.50 were in high demand and supplies have been declining. With this operating system, and the team Fanjita Noobz were able to create a downgrader "for the current firmware, version 3.40. It has become possible to downgrade any PSP, as long as there was nothing higher to 3.40, with the old firmware 1.50, and therefore use it for homebrew once again.
Sony was not too happy about this exploit. They have issued a recall on GTA: LCS, and sent new copies patched in stores. They have also begun to publish updates of firmware game discs themselves. Newer games required newer firmwares, and so homebrew users had to choose between a fully functional PSP, or a paralyzed system was compatible with newer games. As always, the scene found workarounds, specifically a program called Devhook, but it was confusing and complicated to implement.
CFW
Custom firmware replaces your PSP official firmware, but this is not a continuous updating.
You can easily uninstall the custom firmware and go back to official firmware if you
do not like or do not want to use custom firmware more.
Custom firmware has all the features of Sony's official firmware, but also adds capacity
calculation PSP homebrew ISOs and PSX eboot directly from the game menu in the XMB.
so you can still play your original UMD discs, music and videos using custom firmware.
Custom Firmware also has an option to use NO-UMD Mode 'so you can run your ISOs PSP UMD inserted without.
No UMD mode-The "Sony NP9660" has the highest rate of compatibility and almost all ISO games work with it.
If you have ISOs PSP format, DAX, you need to convert to ISO or CSO files using UMDGen,
Custom Firmware does not support the format DAX.
PSP UMD drive should be empty while improving / downgrade your PSP.
(Unless decommissioning of 3.03 and 3.50, you need a UMD inserted to start the downgrader)
It is recommended to remove your PSP UMD disc before doing anything in this guide.
If you do not have a USB cable, but you have a memory card reader, you can use instead.
when you see connect your PSP to your computer and establish a USB connection,
Turn off your PSP, take your PSP Memory Stick and insert it into your memory card reader.
When you see "Close the USB connection and disconnect your PSP from your computer"
Take the Memory Stick slot on your computer and insert it into your PSP and turn on your PSP.
A hacker known as Dark Alex developed a compelling solution. He has developed software that, when installed on a PSP running firmware 1.50, allows the user to install a firmware hybrid of his own design. In other words, a PSP with firmware Dark Alex's Custom has all the features and functionality of the standard firmware Sony, and more support for firmware 1.50 based software. The firmware also came with something called "chicken", short for Homebrew Enabler. Developers could create software for the familiar 1.50 firmware, or the new 3.XX series this way.
Dark Alex has continued to refine his custom firmwares, and managed to keep each new major release Sony. His latest firmware stable, M33 3.80, is the most advanced version yet. It has tons of new features including a kit of custom development support a 1.50 kernel plugin, and most importantly, a hacked network update. In the past, updating the network running would update the firmware Sony vanilla, removing homebrew functionality. However, in 3.80 M33, because it is possible to update to new custom firmware with Sony's own tool.
So what are the new features of this custom firmware? This new custom firmware has all the characteristics Official 1.4 firmware has plus a few extras. Many people ask me whether to install it and my answer is YES. I have firmware 4.01 M33-2 Custom already installed on my phat PSP and I have not encountered any bugs yet. But do not take my word for it. Try it yourself. You can always return to your old 3.90 M33-3 if you want.
