Can you patent an idea for a consumer product without a working prototype?
I have an idea for a patent, but have not built a prototype. Is possible to patent something based on the writing and diagrams? Also, could you tell me the process required to apply for a patent?
First, and more directly, does not need a prototype, although a prototype can help. Second, I suggest you do not talk in terms of an idea because ideas are not patentable. Inventions are patentable. This may seem a minor issue, but if you're talking to people in the know about your invention with the word "idea" can turn them off. Many people who have great ideas but no means to carry those ideas through their fruits, so there is no invention. For more detail, in order applying for a patent must be able to explain how to do and user of your invention so that someone who is knowledgeable about the field of the invention can actually make and use the invention. You can do this without having a prototype, provided you explain your invention will make clear to others what to do to make and use it. The reason I said earlier that a prototype can help is because the act of creating a prototype will help you present alternatives, options, and also identify the things that really do not work (or work well). On paper, many things seem to go to work, but in practice things do not always translate as expected. Having said that, if you do not have the resources to create a prototype that should not prevent the filing of a patent.
