Could be a polar shift an acceptable theory for the extinction of the dinosaurs?
If so, how come I've never heard this as a theory? With a lot of talk about 2012 and polar shift as possible (among other things, the theory that it occurs). I started thinking about the effects of something like this on Earth.
For none of the others have quite nailed so I'll give it a try. The polar shift in 2012 that you refer to refers to the polarity the sun, not Earth. Polarity of the magnetosphere is recorded in any ferrous or ferric magma. As it cools, the iron in the magma will align with the polarity of the earth. This is especially common and useful in the seafloor spreading, however, from the depths of the ocean is much younger, not much use in examining the Earth's polar history primitive.
