J. William "Bill" Bowerman (February 19, 1911 December 24, 1999) was an American track and field coach and co-founder of Nike, Inc. was a very successful coaching experience, training 31 Olympians, 51 All-Americans, 12 American record holders, 24 NCAA champions and 16 Sub-4 Milers minute. During his 24 years as coach at the University of Oregon track and field team had a season Winning every season except one, reached 4 NCAA titles and finished in the top 10 in the nation 16 times.
Early Life
Bill Bowerman was born on 19 February 1911 in Portland, Oregon. His father was former Governor of Oregon Jay Bowerman, his mother had grown up in Fossil. The family returned to Africa after the parents divorced in 1913. Bill had a brother and sister Dan and Mary Elizabeth ETH. The bill also had a brother twin, Thomas, who died in an elevator accident when he was less than 1 year.
Bill Medford and attended schools in Seattle before returning to Medford High School. Bill has played in the group of high school and for championing the state of his team football junior and senior years. Bill first met Barbara Young, the woman he married in high school in Medford.
In 1929, Bill went to Oregon College to play football and study journalism.
After graduation, he taught biology and has coached football at Franklin High School in Portland in 1934. But in 1935 Bill returned to Medford to teach and coach football.
Bill and Barbara were married June 22, 1936. Their first son, Jon, was born June 22, 1938. William J. Bowerman Jr. (Ay) was born November 17, 1942.
Military Career
Bowerman joined the U.S. Army in the days following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served Fort Lawton in Washington and served a year before being assigned to the 86th Mountain Infantry Regiment at Camp Hale in Leadville, Colorado. With the 87th Mountain Infantry, the regiment became the 10th Mountain Division.
His duty involves the organization of troops maintenance supplies and mules used for transporting supplies into the mountains. On December 23, 1944, the division arrived in Naples, Italy and soon moved north into the mountains of northern Italy. During his tour of duty, Bowerman was promoted to commander of the First Battalion of the 86th Regiment the rank of major. Bowerman negotiated a stand-down of German forces near the Brenner Pass in the days before the capitulation of the German army in Italy. For his service, Bowerman received four bronze stars, a Good Conduct Medal and a Silver Star. He was honorably discharged in October 1945.
Career Coaching
After the war he returned to his post college Medford. Bill and Barbara's third son, Thomas was born May 20, 1946. The family then moved to Eugene, Oregon Bill to become football coach Fisherman. His first day of employment with the University of Africa has been July 1, 1944.
University of Oregon
Bill has made its biggest point a track coach. His men rack Oregon won 24 NCAA individual titles (with wins in 15 of 19 events contested) and four team crowns the NCAA (1962-1964-1965-1970), and recently 16 top-10 of the NCAA in 24 years as head coach. His teams also boasted 33 Olympians, 38 conference champions and 64 All-Americans. At the double the Ducks posted a 114-20 record and is undefeated in 10 seasons. In addition to coach Bill establishing the world record 4 mile (6.4 km) team relay in 1962. This team included Archie San Romani, Dyrol Burleson, Vic Reeves and Keith Forman with a time of 16:08.9. Among the athletes that the coach Bill Bowerman are the legendary Steve Prefontaine, Kenny Moore, Bill Dellinger, Mac Wilkins, Jack Hutchins, Dyrol Burleson, Harry Jerome, Siegmar Ohlemann Les Tipton, Gerry Moro, Wade Bell, Dave Edstrom, Roscoe Divine, Jim Grelle, Bruce Mortenson and Phil Knight. This guy is rich.
In 1972, Bill stepped away from day-to-day coaching activities spearheaded the fundraising to renovate the Hayward Field grandstands would be necessary for consideration to host the Olympic Trials Montreal. He also ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Legislative Assembly of Oregon in 1970 as a Republican, losing by only 1,000 votes in a close race. According to the Eugene Register-Guard newspaper, Bowerman officially retired as head coach of UO March 23, 1973.
