The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium has been a major concert hall for several decades and hosted the Oscars in the 1960s. McCabe's Guitar Shop is still a performance space leading acoustics and retail. Bergamot Station is a city-owned art gallery compound that includes the Santa Monica Museum of Art. The city also The Santa Monica Heritage Museum.
Santa Monica is the home of the Third Street Promenade, a major shopping district outdoor pedestrian-oriented stretching three blocks between Wilshire Blvd. and Broadway (Broadway not the same in downtown and south Los Angeles). Third Street was closed for three blocks and converted into a pedestrian only section to allow people to congregate, shop and enjoy street performers. Santa Monica Place, the mall Interior designed by Frank Gehry, is located just south. It was closed for redevelopment, and is expected to reopen in spring 2010, a complex, sophisticated computer games with more outdoor space.

Aboriginal people and tourists have benefited the Santa Monica Rugby Club since 1972. Santa Monica College is a community college founded in 1929. Many graduates transfer MSC University of California. It occupies 35 acres (14 hectares) and welcomes 30,000 students each year. The RAND Frederick S. Santa Monica is also the west (Pacific) terminus Historic Route 66. Near the eastern border of Santa Monica, Sepulveda Boulevard reaches of Long Beach in the south, the north end of the valley San Fernando. Just east of Santa Monica is Interstate 405, the San Diego Freeway, a major north-south to Los Angeles and Orange County, California.

Bus

The city of Santa Monica is also served by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation bus lines of the Authority. In early November, it is about 68 F (20 C). At the end of January, temperatures are around 63 F (17 C). This winter, however, when the hot dry winds of the Santa Anas are most common. In mid-December 2004, temperatures climbed to 84 F (28 C) in Santa Monica for a few days straight, with perfectly sunny skies. In contrast, temperatures above 10 degrees below the average are rare.
The rainy season from late October to late March. Winter storms usually approach from the north-west and move quickly through the Southland. There is very little rain during the rest of the year. The total annual rainfall is unpredictable, because wet years are often followed by droughts.
Santa Monica usually enjoys a cool breeze from the ocean, keeping the air fresh and clean. Therefore, smog is less a problem for Santa Monica than elsewhere around Los Angeles. However, in the autumn months from September to November, the Santa Ana winds often blow from the east, bringing domestic air smog on beaches.

According to the census 2000, there 84,084 people, 44,497 households and 16,775 families residing in the city. The population density is 3,930.4 / km (10,178.7 / mi). There are 47,863 housing units at an average density of 2,237.3 / km (5,794.0 / km). The racial makeup of the city is 78.29% White, 7.25% Asian, 3.78% African American, Native American 0.47%, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 5.97% from other races, and 4.13% from two or more races. 13.44% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any What breed. There are 44,497 households out of which 15.8% have children under the age of 18, 27.5% are married couples who live together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband, and 62.3% were non-families. 51.2% of households are made up of individuals and 10.6% of individuals 65 years or more. Government and Infrastructure
The Santa Monica City Council, a council form of government management, with seven elected Council members at large, is the governing body of the city. Mayor Ken Genser died January 9, 2010, and Pam O'Connor took the title of mayor temporarily. In the state legislature Santa Monica is located in the 23rd Senate District of California, represented by Democrat Fran Pavley, and in the 41st District of California District of the Assembly, Julia Brownley represented by Democrats. Federally, Santa Monica lies in the district of California in Congress 30 which has a Cook PVI D +20 and was represented by Democrat Henry Waxman.

Crime
In 2006, crime Santa Monica affected 4.41% of the population, slightly below the national average crime rate this year of 4.48%. Hate crimes has generally been minimal in Santa Monica, a single incident reported in 2007. However, the city has experienced a surge of anti-Muslim hatred Crime in 2001, after the attacks of September 11. levels of hate crimes back to their minimum levels of 2000 by 2002.
In 2006, Santa Monica voters passed Measure "Y" with a 65% majority, which proposes the issuance of summonses to smoking marijuana at the bottom the list of police priorities. A 2009 study by the Santa Monica Daily Press has shown that since the law took effect in 2007, the Santa Monica police were "not issued citations for offenses involving adult, personal use of marijuana in private homes. "
Gang activity
While gentrification has transformed much of the city, parts of Santa Monica gang activity experience. The city estimates that fewer than 50 gang members in Santa Monica, although some deny that the community organizers. The gang activity has prevailed for decades in the Pico neighborhood, particularly the part of the area running roughly from 14th Street to the east Cloverfield, and between Pico Boulevard and Colorado Ave. This war has sporadically spilled into the halls of Santa Monica High School and the impact daily life for students at Olympic High School (corner of Ocean Park Boulevard and Lincoln Blvd). These various feuds have claimed dozens of lives over more than two decades.
Culver / Pico feud
One of the most violent feuds was between Latino Santa Monica 13 gang and the rival Culver City 13 gang. In 1998, five deaths shootings occurred in a period of two weeks between these two gangs.
In October 1998, Culver City 13 alleged members gang Omar Sevilla, 21, of Culver City was killed. A few hours after the shooting of Sevilla, German tourist Horst Fietz was killed. Several days later Juan Martin Campos, 23, a Santa Monica employer and the former gang member was shot. Police believe this was a killing of retaliation in response to the death of Omar Sevilla. Less than twenty-four hours later, Javier Cruz was wounded outside his home on 17th and Michigan, a violence riddled pocket of the Pico area.
In 2006, there was a double homicide in the clothing store on Westside Lincoln Boulevard. During the incident, members Culver City gang David "Puppet" Robles and Jesse "Psycho" Garcia entered the store in masks started to open fire, killing Anthony and Michael Juarez. They then ran outside to a getaway vehicle driven by a third member of Culver City gang, who is now also in custody. The clothing store has been growing at a deadlock for local gang members in Santa Monica. The dead included two men from Northern California who had was simply visit the store owner, their cousin, to see if they could open a similar store in their area. According to police, the incident was in retaliation for a shooting committed by days of Santa Monica 13 gang before the Juarez brothers were slaughtered.
Besides the rivalry with the Culver City gang, black and Latino gang members also feud with Pico Venice and West Los Angeles gangs. The main rivals in these areas include Venice 13, and Venice Shoreline Crips gangs located in the Oakwood neighborhood of Venice, California. The gang Sotel 13 located in West Los Angeles has long been the main rival Latino gangs of Santa Monica.

Hundreds of movies have been filmed in part or together in the city of Santa Monica. One of the oldest outside shots in Santa Monica is Buster Keaton's Spite Marriage (1929) shows a lot of 2nd Street. The comedy It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) included several scenes shot in Santa Monica, especially along the California Street hill, which leads to detect treasure film, "Big W". The Sylvester Stallone movie Rocky III (1982) shows Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed Training to fight against Clubber Lang in running on the beach of Santa Monica, and Stallone's Demolition Man (1993) includes Santa Monica parameters. Henry Jaglom indie Somebody to Love (1987), the last film in which Orson Welles appears, takes place in the venerable Santa Monica Theater Mayfair. Heathers (1989) used Santa Monica John Adams Middle School for many exterior shots. The documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys (2001) and the related drama Lords of Dogtown (2005) on both influential skateboard culture of Santa Monica's Ocean Park neighborhood in the 70s.

Raymond's most famous Chandler, the private detective Philip Marlowe is often a part of his adventures in a place called "Bay City", which is modeled on the Depression era of Santa Monica.
